Nothing Much New

Well work at Cook Children's continues. It's awesome to be in a place that supports a strong Information Security Office. Right now we are working on lots of policy and guidelines. Soon I hope to get started on the actual audits.

I was recently sent a cool link to some video from Iraq. It seems some insurgents thought they'd film preparations for an attack on some Marines and ended up taping their own demise. Clicky here to watch.

Brady Bill / Gun Control Effectiveness

There is an interesting article posted on the NRA's initiative site which talks about just how effective gun control is in society. As some of you know I am all for supporting the Second Amendment and Right To Carry laws. The article lists a few figures about the drop in murder rates and other crime statistics after RTC laws are put in place.

Take the NRA's thoughts for whatever you want. I know statistics can be spun in many ways and can be made to support almost any argument. Before you dismiss the NRA just because it's the NRA or because they don't cite specific reports and studies for these facts read the article from the CDC regarding the same issue and some guy from Utah's independent "report."

First Day of Work

Well, I've made it through the first day at Cook Children's. It seems to be a great place to work.

There's lots to do here Information Security wise. There's tons of regulations and such that a hospital is required to comply with, not just HIPAA. Currently we are working on 21 CFR part 11 compliance in certain areas. Then it's back to audits and compliance checking across the organization. One of the things that should make compliance checks and enforcement easier is that the ISO and I are part of Internal Audit rather than part of IT itself.

Anyway, this looks like it'll be a great move for me.

It's New Year

As you may have noticed it's 2007. Hopefully this year will be a good one for all of you.
