HIPAA and Security

So, as many of you know I work in Information Security. Currently I do Information Security as it relates to Healthcare.

Now, being in Healthcare, we are bound to follow this silly little law called HIPAA, or as many vendors spell it HIPPA. Learn to spell it if you are going to try and sell me something related to it, you provide me something that says HIPPA on it and I terminate all discussions with you. But I digress...

This HIPAA law, has two main parts that we are concerned with the Privacy Rule and the Security Rule. People get all worked up about being compliant with these two parts, they invest tons of cash in HIPAA specific tools and gadgets from vendors. They run around and virtually beat people to death chanting HIPAA, HIPAA, HIPAA as if it is the sole reason for Information Security in the Healthcare arena. People get tired of hearing it, they've heard it for years. Heck, I'm tired of hearing it.

Information Security is about doing what is right, each and every time. It's about protecting the information you have because you SHOULD, not because somebody is going to come along and fine you if you don't. It's about due diligence, following standards, best practices and having accountability for what people do with your systems and data.

Random Stuff

Well, it's playoff time again in the NHL. The Dallas Stars are once again in the hunt. They did well in the first game against the Ducks. But have some how managed to only be up in the series 3-2. They only need one more win to move on and can't manage to put it together. The other day they had a disappointing 5-2 loss. Ouch, empty net goal and all. Hopefully we aren't in for another first round exit like the last, what, FIVE years?

As for Zachary, man he's huge. He's up to 26" and 15.8 lbs. Just got his 4 month shots this last week, man that was sad. He was all happy and talking, then the Nurse snuck up on him, grabbed his little legs and stabbed him three times in his chubby little thighs. It almost made me cry. Dang, how can you even do that job? Stabbing Babies for a living. I couldn't do it.

Zachary has also decided to sprout a couple of teeth! He's getting the bottom two in the center. He's not terribly grumpy for being a teething baby, he did manage to bite me today though. Laugh I guess he didn't want me checking on his progress.

Getting Big

Zachary is 17 weeks today and is already over 14 lbs. In the past week he's started to roll all the way over when he wants to. Most of the time he uses his new skill to turn himself around when he's on his play mat. Zack also found his voice in the past month, in a big way.

Here's Zacky doing his Leprechaun impression.
